Starmer’s Firesale on UK Overseas Territories

This week has seen new calls for the UK to enter negotiations over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, after the breakdown in relationship between the UK and US has seen the US administration threaten to withdraw their support for UK sovereignty of the islands.

You can't really blame the Argentinians for trying - the fact that the Falkland Islands have been British since before the country of Argentina even existed, hasn't stopped decades of attempts to claim the islands as their own. Sadly what the Argentinians see, is a British government that has repeatedly undermined the sovereignty of its overseas territories since it came into power, despite manifesto commitments to the contrary.

Whether or not it is the attempt to give away the Chagos archipelago to Mauritius and to then pay to lease them back; the sacrifice of border control of Gibraltar to the Spanish; or the failure to defend the Akrotiri military base in Cyprus - the signals this government is sending is that there is a limited-time firesale on all UK territories, and the opportunity will only last as long as this government does.
