Freshwater Polling: Public Agree Rule out EU Membership for Foreseeable Future

Following the recent essay from Tony Blair covering multiple aspects of UK Government policy, Freshwater Strategy undertook some targeted polling on behalf of City AM, to gauge public alignment with the Former Prime Minister's views. One of the more interesting items the polling suggested, was that the British public agree with him that rejoining the EU should be ruled out "for the foreseeable future". This of course is not a term that denotes a specific length of time, but it is typically used to represent a multi-year length, certainly longer than a parliamentary term which is 5 years. In a legal context, the term is normally used to denote a period longer than 10 years.

Ashcroft Polling: Public against EU Rejoin on Multiple Factors

Lord Ashcroft through his polling agency has also undertaken some detailed polling on EU rejoin obligations, to gauge public appetite for accepting these obligations and the reality of the support (or lack thereof) for actually rejoining the EU.

Their polling found that 66% of those questioned were against rejoining at all, if it meant an increase in financial contributions over the levels when we were previously members. As the rebate would no longer exist, and the EU budget has since doubled to two trillion Euros, this is an impossible demand as the financial contributions would be over double what they were previously, likely over triple.

The polling also found that 61% of those who took part, found the obligation to adopt the Euro as unacceptable. Again this is a default requirement of EU membership, so this yet again shows that the British public do not actually want to be a part of the EU.
