Observer Polling UPDATE: August 2026

On Saturday 8th August, Opinium published the latest batch of polling results conducted on behalf of The Observer newspaper, which took place earlier in the week on 5th August. As we have reported on previously, Opinium routinely but infrequently include a question on Brexit preference on their nationally representative sample of the British public. This has not happened again since we first reported on it back in June, but being the eager beavers that we are at Britain Unbound HQ we routinely check all Opinium polling results to see if the question has been included.

The August 5th polling included the question again. V1007: "Thinking about Brexit, which of the following comes closest to your view?"

The results were yet again consistent, in that they were yet again inconsistent with the narrative portrayed by those who wish to rejoin the EU. The polling showed a 55% majority for staying out of the EU, against a 34% minority rejoining and an 11% "don't know". When the "don't know" responses are discounted, this gives a 62% majority for staying out the EU - a 10 percentage point increase on the referendum result of 2016.
