A senior voice in the French political party currently most likely to be in government in 2027, says that it would veto any attempt for the UK to rejoin the EU if it were to be in power.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, MEP Charles-Henri Gallois said that the party were against any further EU enlargement, but furthermore if Labour were to attempt to rejoin without a referendum then they would veto on principle. He said that "to do so without a referendum would obviously be a denial of democracy because the people expressed their will through a referendum to leave". He went on to say that "it seems perfectly normal to me, given that there was a referendum to leave, that we can't accept a country rejoining without a referendum".
The EU membership has the right to veto any new membership ambition, so this statement effectively rules out any wish for the UK to rejoin irrespective of any political desire to do so on the side of the UK or the EU, should the Rassemblement National party be elected into power in 2027.
The comments from the RN party have historical reflections in the strongly-held position of the former French President, Charles de Gaulle - who twice vetoed UK attempts to join the then EEC in 1963 and 1967.
