Observer Polling: Brits Want To Stay Out The EU

Remarkable polling data published by Opinium this evening, conducted on behalf of The Observer newspaper, shows that when given the choice between rejoining the EU and staying out of the EU, the British people would prefer to stay out.

The polling conducted between 3rd and 5th June of 2150 UK adults, which is a representative sample of the UK, presented those polled with 5 different options regarding the EU relationship, and were asked to choose the option that was closest to their preferred outcome. Those options were:

  • To rejoin the EU
  • To stay out of the EU, but foster a closer relationship between the UK and EU
  • To stay out of the EU, and keep the relationship broadly the same
  • To stay out of the EU, and increase the distance in the relationship
  • Don't know
Opinium V1007, Chart 1

Though the option to rejoin the EU received a plurality of votes at 33%, the options to stay out of the EU collectively received a majority of votes, at 55%. This seems at least to us here at Britain Unbound to be a very newsworthy story, which will no doubt be picked up and covered by the Observer. However being the diligent researchers that we are, we looked back at Opinium poll data for previous weeks in May of this year, and found very similar results in the polling for 20th May. In that polling, those taking part were asked whether or not the idea of rejoining the EU was acceptable or unacceptable to them - with the results showing a majority of 54% thought rejoining the EU was unacceptable. Given that this was from over two weeks ago, we are sure that The Observer must've just missed this story, and did not intentionally ignore the data from the polling that they paid for, on questions they paid to be asked.
