POLL: Half of Brits Less Likely To Support Rejoin Due to Euro

LONDON, 13th June 2026: British voters remain steadfastly opposed to swapping the Pound for the Euro as the price for rejoining the European Union, a new poll reveals today. The YouGov polling, conducted on behalf of the newly formed non-partisan campaign organisation Britain Unbound, has revealed exclusively that the British public are less likely to support rejoining the EU, if it means having to adopt the Euro or accept interest rates set by the European Central Bank.

The polling, which took place from 25-26 May and included a representative sample of 2120 GB adults, found that 49% of people would be less likely to support rejoining the EU, with the need to adopt the Euro. This obligation is in EU law, and so exists for all those countries that would seek to accede to the EU, including the UK. Only 30% of people would be more likely to support rejoining (5%) or would continue to support rejoining to the same degree (25%), when taking this obligation into consideration.

The polling also showed that 40% of Remain voters in 2016, would reduce their support for rejoining under this obligation.

This wish to not accept one of the fundamental obligations of EU membership, which is standard and applies to all new members, demonstrates that the support for rejoining the EU is merely a “vibes-based” response given to vague questioning, that does not stand up to even a small amount of scrutiny.

The polling also showed that 40% of people would be less likely to support rejoining the EU, if doing so meant that UK interest rates would be set by the European Central Bank rather than the Bank of England - again a fundamental obligation of EU accession, once a country has implemented the adoption of the Euro. The two key economic policies, seen as fundamental to national sovereignty, are among conditions required by Brussels for any country seeking EU membership. The findings are likely to inform the growing debate within the Labour Party over making its EU “reset” a central plank at the next general election.

This release is the second from Britain Unbound, who last week revealed that only 27% of people would be willing to accept less power over rules and laws that apply in the UK, in exchange for greater access to the EU Single Market - the approach currently being negotiated within the so-called EU Reset.

The questions asked - “If rejoining the EU required the UK to replace the Pound with the Euro, would this make you more or less likely to support rejoining the EU, or would it make no difference?” and “If rejoining the EU meant that UK interest rates would be set by the European Central Bank rather than the Bank of England, would this make you more or less likely to support rejoining the EU, or would it make no difference?”

Steve Wright, Director of Britain Unbound - “This polling further solidifies the findings of over 60 polls conducted in the last five years, on the solid and sustained rejection of any wish for the UK to adopt the Euro, and the financial controls and oversight that comes with that obligation. The very notion of rejoining the EU under the obligations that would have to exist, is a complete non-starter. The UK needs to move on from the continued navel-gazing and attempts to reverse majority decisions, and instead focus on taking advantage of the opportunities that Brexit has handed back to the UK people.”

Britain Unbound Co-Chair, Advisory Council, Dr Richard Johnson - “When it comes to rejoining the EU, the prospect of monetary union is a dead end street in the eyes of many British voters. And no wonder. The eurozone has shown the folly in using monetary policy as a political tool to build European unity. The former Labour Chancellor Denis Healey predicted in 1999, 'if Britain were to join the euro, the consequences might well turn our public opinion against the whole concept of European unity'. It seems he is still right.”

Britain Unbound Executive Committee Member, Julian Jessop - "There is now a mountain of evidence that support for rejoining the EU crumbles when the costs and conditions are revealed. We Brits still value our sovereignty and do not want to hand control back to Brussels."

Britain Unbound Co-Chair, Advisory Council, John Redwood - “Voters remember the high costs and taxes and the anti business regulations when we were in the EU .Our growth rate halved as members compared to the 20 years before we joined. Why inflict more self harm? Why volunteer for higher taxes to  pay for EU big bills and growing debts?”

Britain Unbound Advisory Council Member, David Frost - "This Britain Unbound poll shows, once again, that every time the British people are asked to contemplate the real conditions for rejoining the EU, the supposed majority for it evaporates. And rightly so. British voters voted against membership for good reasons even on the terms available at the time. Why would we want to go back on conditions that are even worse?”

Britain Unbound Advisory Council Member, David Campbell-Bannerman - “We hear a lot of nonsense about people wanting to rejoin the EU. But proper polls show that once people understand the hard reality of rejoining - having to sign up to the Euro; giving away lots of powers, paying billions more - they change their minds fast.”

Britain Unbound Advisory Council Member, Bernard Jenkin MP - “Most UK voters can see the Euro is about taking control of the UK economy, and they have more sense than to accept that. The UK’s economy will grow faster with flexible exchange rates and being able to set its own interest rates. The last thing the EU would want is the UK back in the EU as a half-hearted member.  Accepting that the Euro should replace the pound Sterling would be a key test of the UK’s commitment to the EU’s federal goals. They would rather keep us out, than have us back in being disruptive.”

Britain Unbound Advisory Council Member, Gawain Towler - “Like so much in life, the devil is in the details. The fact is when people see the wolf of the EU they soon realise that the sheep they’ve been promised isn’t real.”
