Daily Briefing – Tuesday 26th May

News

Good morning and welcome to your Tuesday morning Unbound Daily Briefing – here are the topics we’ll be talking about today:

  • Reeves’ Love of Brexit Benefits
  • Reality Starting to Sink in on EU Membership Requirements
  • The Acceptable Bigotry of the Rejoin Virus

Reeves’ Love of Brexit Benefits

Hot on the heels of her previous love of Brexit benefits last week to cut tariffs and reduce VAT, the Chancellor has now made it clear to her fellow cabinet ministers that they must prioritize “Buying British” in four key areas of government procurement – and that if necessary the Treasury will overrule them if they award contracts overseas. In a letter to cabinet ministers, published by The Guardian, she has said that “it is disappointing that we are still seeing too many government contract awards where this is not happening. We have instructed officials to take further steps to ensure your departments act in the wider national interest rather than solely focusing on narrow operational priorities.”

This is of course completely against EU Procurement Rules,

Reality Starting to Sink in on EU Membership Requirements

The Labour leadership debate, and the use of the EU as a campaign tool, is starting to backfire against those who wish to rejoin. With the increased focus on the possibility of rejoining, the mainstream media have been asking more questions on how it would work, and finding that the options are wholly unacceptable to the British voter.

Articles in the Independent, the Telegraph and the i Paper, as well as a segment in the Jeremy Vine show on Channel 5, all now discussing the negative aspects to membership that the British voters will not accept.

The Acceptable Bigotry of the Rejoin Virus

It has been a common feature of the often nasty and vitriolic political debate post-Brexit, that those who wished to rejoin the EU resented older voters and celebrated their demise as long as it helps their perceived balance of opinions at the ballot box. However the Britain Unbound team has taken some solace from the strong response Nick Cohen has received on X/Twitter for his very inappropriate comment that rejoin is winning the debate, “one funeral at a time”.

We hope that this is a sign that the mood is changing, but we will not hold our breaths.
