This morning the King's Speech took place, as the ceremonial opening of the next session of Parliament. 37 Bills were outlined, including 8 that were introduced in the previous session, but the one Bill given top billing and holding the most consequence for the UK was the European Partnership Bill.
As even the BBC describes it, this is a "controversial" Bill, which looks to sideline Parliament in any future alignment with the EU, giving the government the power to change UK laws and made them subservient to their respective EU laws. This Bill will of course have to get through Parliament itself in order to give the government this power, but with a sizeable majority in Parliament for the current Labour Party, it will be difficult for opposition to prevent this Bill from going through without significant objection from Labour backbenchers.
Britain Unbound will be publishing more on this Bill and its implications, as the details get released - but for more information on the wider and expected implications of dynamic alignment, we offer the following information:
- Our in-depth explainer on the areas currently included in the EU-Reset, what they mean, and what they might cost the British people
