News
Good morning and welcome to your Sunday morning briefing on the relevant news likely to be talked about this weekend:
- Political speculation over the future leadership of the Labour Party and the country, following the local election results
- The planned speech on EU Reset terms, from Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday 11th May
- The planetary alignment of separatist parties in all three devolved governments at the same time, and what that might mean
- The Europe Day celebrations in the EU, and some of the negative fallout from the messaging
- The continued conflict with the US and Iran
Political Fallout from Local and Devolved Government Elections
As had been widely speculated and expected, the political pressure for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to set out a timetable for his departure has only increased after the outcome of the local and devolved government elections. As a cross-party campaign on the topics of national sovereignty, culture and values, Britain Unbound takes pride in a healthy democracy where the British people can display their concerns and enact change at the ballot box. Britain Unbound takes no position on party political preference, but is concerned that the judgement seemingly taken by the Labour government is to double-down on sacrificing legislative control to the EU, in the hope that it will reinvigorate support for the beleaguered leadership.
Prime Ministerial Speech on Closer EU Alignment, Monday 11th May
As mentioned above, the Britain Unbound team is concerned that the response to significant gains for the pro-Brexit Reform UK Party in the elections, has been to double-down on the pro-EU messaging. This does appear to be counter to the wishes of the British people, and may well cause further political and civil tensions in the weeks and months to come. As our in-house expert and contributor Julian Jessop highlighted in his recent posts on X, the very shallow analysis of recent high-level polling on EU sentiment may well be steering the current government in the wrong direction, and could well cause them further damage in the minds of the electorate.
Separatist Parties' Planetary Alignment
One unfortunate outcome of the demise of the Labour Party in the devolved nations, is the rise of the separatist parties in those devolved nations as a natural consequence. The lack of faith in the political system to enact change has been widely commented on as leading the electorate to vote for parties who have not previously been in power such as the Green Party and Reform UK, on the presumed basis that those parties have no track record of disappointing their voters. In the devolved nations, this frustration with the status quo can also lead to increased support for those who advocate for more radical change - for the dissolution of the United Kingdom itself.
The War in Iran
Despite positive commentary to the contrary from the US administration over recent days, there is no external signs of improved circumstances in Iran - and the issues for shipping in the Strait of Hormuz continue into the weekend. As the difficulties continue into the summer months, many are now baking in assumptions of tighter supply on jet fuel, and increased costs at the pumps.
